So in case someone left it out or forgot to mention it when they explained what it meant to be a Christian, let me be clear: There is no forgiveness without repentance. There is no salvation without surrender. There is no life without death. There is no believing without committing.
(Exploring who might be responsible for the death of Christ)
Today - Judas Iscariot
Dr. Adam Dooley - Dauphin Way Baptist Church, Mobile, AL
I. Outward [religion] is NO substitute for a real [relationship] with God.
Luke 22:3-6 (NASB)
Matthew 26:47-49 (NASB)
The average Christian is just as proud, just as materialistic, just as judgmental, and just as self-absorbed as those who don’t even pretend to be religious.
Matthew 7:21 (NASB)
It is harder to share the gospel in Mobile, AL (Bible Belt) than it is in the Northeast and Northwest where people don’t even care to be saved. Why?! Because we live under the lie of Judas Iscariot.
II. Overwhelming [remorse] is no substitute for biblical [repentance] to God.
You cannot have repentance without remorse, but you can have remorse without repentance. They ARE NOT the same thing!
Peter denies Jesus - Matthew 26:69-75
Judas feels remorse - Matthew 27:3-5 (NASB)
Peter repented of his sin. Judas only felt [bad] about his sin.
Remorse = 90° turn - back to sin.
Repentance = 180° turn - towards Jesus.
John 8:31-32 (NASB)
John 14:21 (NASB)
III. Opportunistic [relief] is no substitute for [redemption] from God.
If you are trying to fix things in your own power, you are so overcome with regret to be humble and ask God for forgiveness and repent. Judas tried to fix the situation himself. He gave the money back and he hung himself. “I’ll fix this, and then I’ll go to God.” If you could fix this, there’d be no need to go to God.
James 4:6 (NASB) - “And do you suppose God doesn’t care? The proverb has it that ‘He’s a fiercely jealous lover.’ And what He gives in love is far better than anything else you’ll find. It’s common knowledge that ‘God goes against the willful proud; God gives grace to the willing humble.’ So let God work His will in you. Yell a loud NO to the Devil and watch him scamper.Say a quiet yes to God and He’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field.Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.”
Come To Me (feat. Jenn Johnson), Bethel Music - The Loft Sessions
I know I just posted this the other day but it looks so cool…I wanted to post it again! Plus…I could really use some coffee right now! :)
“Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.”
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
“But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit…”
When you find yourself short, snippy, or rude with people around you — that’s an indicator that it has been too long since you spoken to God or read His word.
“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”
